Piping/Plant Layout Design Technician

Job Summary
The Engineering Design Technician reports to and works under the direct supervision of the Manager of Plant Engineering. 
Job involves preparation of drawings, assisting Plant Engineering & Maintenance Department personnel with activities related to design work, and providing technical support as needed.
Main Duties
  • Assists engineers in Plant Engineering and Maintenance Department activities. 
  • Includes conceptual design work, drawing preparation, field studies, documenting and updating engineering records and other related technical support. 
  • Produces project design drawings and specifications under the direction of the Manager of Plant Engineering, Maintenance Supervisor, Electrical Supervisor, or Project Engineer. 
  • Creates layout drawings of facilities, buildings, departments and process units. 
  • Lays out piping for steam, water, air and process fluids. 
  • Makes equipment location layouts; such as for rolling mills, grinders, extruders, pumps, tanks and dust collectors.
  • Draws and updates electrical wiring diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams to ANSI standards, process flow diagrams, engineering charts and graphs, and other miscellaneous graphics. 
  • Prepares and updates PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) input/output listings, calibration procedures, operating manuals and miscellaneous forms.
  • Possesses and maintains a proficiency in CAD, including 3D design capabilities.

  • Uses electrical and mechanical instrumentation to conduct field tests and studies.
  • Works with maintenance and electrical personnel to resolve installation and start up problems.
  • Maintains drawing files including equipment drawings, plot plans, building drawings and utility drawings. Uses and maintains Engineering files and records.
Operates Engineering copier and provides drawing prints as required.  Uses metal thickness gages, tachometers, air flow meters, and other engineering instruments to conduct field studies. 
Uses surveying equipment to establish distances and elevations.
Attends training seminars and advanced schooling as directed or requested to maintain a high level of understanding in related fields. 
Keeps current on relevant new technology through contact with salespeople, literature, trade shows and seminars.
Assures observance of Plastics Engineering Company’s policies and procedures regarding record keeping, information security, department operations and safety.
